How do I commission a mural or trompe l’oeil?

Initially you may want to use this website, books and other visual sources to get an initial idea of the sort of thing you would like.  Another very good way to start is to contact Laura and tell her a bit about your project and perhaps arrange a visit so she can discuss your requirements and draw up some ideas.

What is trompe l’oeil?

Trompe l’oeil - is French for 'deceive the eye', and is an art technique involving extremely realistic imagery in order to create the optical illusion that the depicted objects appear in three dimensions. In murals this can be an effective way of creating a visual joke, suggesting perhaps that a blank wall has a bookcase on it, or by creating the illusion that a wall has a window or archway, opening to a further room or a distant view. Not only does this add humour and intrigue to a room, it is an excellent solution where the desire is to increase the visual size of a space or create perspective in a space where the sight lines are shorter than they might be. Trompe L’oeil murals can also be used to create atmosphere in a small awkward space such as an alcove or corner, creating interest where there is perhaps limited space for furniture or ornaments.

What areas of my home might a mural or faux paint effect be suitable for?

Decorative paint finishes can be used anywhere in your home, in a single room, or a single part of a room. There are few limits in terms of size and scale in any direction. As for the climactic issues, with the sealants and varnishes available now, even a damp and steamy atmosphere such as a bathroom or swimming pool is a perfect spot for a mural or paint finish, just as long as the wall the decoration is going onto is reasonably sound. Murals are very popular for a range of areas in the home, from children’s bedrooms, to bathrooms, pool rooms, hallways and garden rooms.

Faux paint effects can be widely used throughout the home, on walls, ceilings and even floors.

How much might it cost?

Each commission is priced individually with factors such as distance, time needed, specialist finishes, and complexity of design all contributing to the price quoted.

How long will it take?

The lead time and completion date for a commission can be agreed before the order is confirmed.  A reasonable average would be four to six weeks from order confirmation to completion depending on the scale of the project and Laura’s other commitments.

What geographical area does the bespoke mural commission service cover?

Laura can be engaged to carry out bespoke wall and floor mural and paint effect commissions throughout London and the South of England.  However, with the options of bespoke hand painted wallpaper, and with painted furniture commissions she may be able to provide a service over a wider geographical area.
