About Laura de la Mare
Laura de la Mare is an artist, illustrator and designer who, over the years, has had the privilege of contributing to the decoration of some of the most beautiful houses in the UK as well as working on projects in Europe, America and Russia.
After studying at St. Martin’s School of Art Laura trained as a restorer in London for many years. Here she learnt the skills of gilding, painted furniture restoration and many other aspects of decorative paint finishes. She eventually became freelance and moved out of London.
Now a West Sussex-based muralist and paint effects artist she creates murals and trompe l’oeil as well as frequently being commissioned to recreate paint effects which were common in many significant houses of the 18th and 19th century. These decorative techniques ,often known as faux finishes, were used to imitate grander, more expensive materials such as marble, rare woodgrains and stone and require skills of a high standard to make them convincing.
Laura also undertakes commissions for paint effects on furniture and floors when required, as well as offering a bespoke hand painted wallpaper service. This allows clients more flexibility and the opportunity to create their own custom wallpaper designs, using either bespoke printing methods or hand painting where appropriate. The designs are frequently inspired by hand painted wallpaper of the past such as the Chinoiserie wallpaper often found in grander 18th century houses.
Laura accepts commissions throughout London and the South of England. Previous mural, paint effects and hand painted wallpaper commissions can be seen on the gallery pages.
Laura has recently designed and launched her own range of fabrics and wallpapers which are showcased on this site and are available for purchase exclusively from www.sorbetliving.com.
Since having children of her own, Laura has also developed a parallel career as a children’s book writer and illustrator which is something she would like to do more of when she has the time.
Laura’s magazine and television credits include appearances on the BBC’s Real Rooms show and coverage in a range of national and regional interiors magazines including The Saturday Telegraph Magazine, World of Interiors, Country Living Magazine, Tatler Interiors and English Home.
